Sophie is a painter and illustrator based on the northern beaches of Sydney. For many years Sophie was known for her signature dramatic black and white landscapes primarily featuring the beautiful pandanus plant. Her more recent work returns to explorations in colour and new subject matter; people and places, architecture, objects, patterns she finds in flora, in the ocean.

“I enjoy exploring the juxtaposition and incongruous coupling of elements in my work. Oddities I see in the everyday catch and hold my eye, things I sometimes like to bring into my compositions. I like whimsy…I like to think my work will bring a smile to the viewer’s face”. 

Most days Sophie can be found in her garden studio behind her home. She is often accompanied by her ‘studio assistant’ black labrador Frank. When she’s not painting she likes to hang out with her family and friends, cook, listen to music (she also plays the cello) and plan adventures with her husband…”there’s always a little sketchbook in my bag”.
